Sports Premium Funding: Sporting Vision
At Staunton and Corse C of E primary we look to inspire and engage children’s interest in sporting activities through providing a wide range of opportunities within school, after school and within the wider community. We look to foster children’s interest in physical wellbeing and healthy lifestyles in order to establish long lasting lifestyle messages. Furthermore, at Staunton and Corse we look to promote our Christian values through sports and positively encourage children to share, respect, support, trust and work together.
School Sports Premium
The government is providing additional funding of £150 million per annum for to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. This funding – provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport – will be allocated to primary school head teachers.
This funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools. At Staunton and Corse this equates to £8000 + £5 per pupil.
Purpose of funding
Schools must spend the additional funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this.
Possible uses for the funding might include:
- hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work with primary teachers when teaching PE
- supporting and engaging the least active children
- paying for professional development opportunities for teachers in PE and sport
- providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE and sport
- running sport competitions, or increasing pupils’ participation in the School Games
- buying quality assured professional development modules or materials for PE and sport
- providing places for pupils on after school sports clubs and holiday clubs
- pooling the additional funding with that of other local schools
School Sports Premium Spending at Staunton and Corse
At Staunton and Corse we want to ensure that every child has equal access to a wide range of sporting activities, both competitive and non-competitive, and that physical activity is sufficiently promoted to ensure that levels of participation are maximized in all areas of the school. Furthermore, the school wishes to ensure that children’s engagement is long lasting and that participation continues beyond the immediate vicinity of the school.
Therefore we have chosen to allocate our sports premium funding in the following ways:
- We have employed an additional midday supervisor that is able to run lunch time sporting clubs that will engage each and every child, including: Football for Key Stage 2, Playground games and cycling.
- We have secured the services of a number professional coaches to both broaden the children’s sporting experiences and allow our teachers to develop their own skills. These include: Cycling, Archery, Free Running, Golf and Tennis.
- We have committed a proportion of the funding to updating our PE resources and the storage of these to ensure that the teachers and children have access to the very best equipment that is available.
- As a school we are keen to develop competitive sports within our local cluster and have utilised some of our funding to secure Youth Sports Trust membership and links with our Secondary partners. These links allow us to participate in a wide range of competitive sports that span the entire primary age range and include: athletics, football, multi-sports, rugby and many more. Furthermore, the links allow us to take advantage of bespoke training opportunities that will further improve teacher’s knowledge, understanding and delivery of PE in the future.
- We have already established a close working relationship with Hartpury College and their students regularly come into school to share their coaching expertise with the staff and children. Furthermore, we also have access to their sporting facilities on a weekly basis at the college campus.
In order to ensure the funding provides sustainable change we have looked to invest in two crucial areas. Firstly, utilising funds to update key curriculum resources has meant that ongoing sports provision will continue to remain at a high standard. Furthermore, allowing sports coaches to work alongside teaching staff has meant that the skill level within the school has been raised and can be sustained into the future beyond the Governments funding.
